Dinner this evening is Bunless burgers with salad and coleslaw.
It’s a great healthy way to enjoy a classic burger with salad minus the bun for those who are looking to reduce or remove grains or carbohydrates from their diet.
The salad was made up of mixed baby leafs, tomatoes, red peppers, cucumber and a creme fraiche and black pepper dressing. I was short on time and used store bought Eversfield organic beef burger grass fed which I buy from Ocado and coleslaw. Usually I would make my own burgers with grass fed minced beef but these are nicer, in fact I would go as far as to say they are the tastiest burgers I have tasted. My children also agree! The leafs were a seasonal picking by the Jamie Oliver lovely summer salad line which included the dressing.
- 4x Good quality grass fed beef burgers
- 1x punnet of piccolo tomatoes
- Half a cucumber
- 1x Red sweet pointer pepper
- 4x spoonfuls of good quality slaw
- 1 bag of mixed seasonal leaves
- Dressing of your choice
First thing is always let your salad and meat sit at an ambient temperature for 15 minutes. Believe it or not, all vegetables, fruits and salads taste so much better not chilled. With regards to the meat, cooking any meat from very cold, to very hot does unpleasant things to the meat fibres and generally makes the meat tougher. Allowing for the meat to warm to an ambient temperature reduces this and will always make for a more tender burger for your bun-less beef burger salad!.
Important! Never leave any meat, cooked or uncooked, at ambient temperatures for more than 1.5 hours else you’ll have some not so lovely bacteria starting to grow and make you have a poorly tummy!
Cook your burgers according to the packets instructions, make sure they are piping hot and cooked right through.
Whilst you let the burgers rest for 5 mins, prepare your salad and arrange to your own personal preference. There’s no rules here with the bunless burger salad, whether you arrange everything carefully or just throw it all on the plate.
Dress your salad last thing and it’s done!
The children absolutely love this dinner, it’s full of their 5 a day and what children don’t love burgers!
